New smell-o-scope reveals Titan’s smell


Using data from the Cassini
spacecraft, a team led by Joshua
Sebree, assistant professor at the
University of Northern Iowa, in the
US, has developed a new recipe
that captured the key ‘flavours’ of
Titan, Saturn’s largest moon.
The researchers mixed the two most
common gases in Titan—nitrogen
and methane—and then added
benzene and other chemicals. After
many attempts they managed to
develop a mixture that matched the
spectral signature registered by
Cassini.
“This is the closest anyone has
come, to our knowledge, to
recreating with lab experiments this
particular feature seen in the Cassini
data,” told Sebree to Gizmodo ’s
Jesus Diaz.
Titan sort of reeks of farts mixed
with methane. Melissa Trainer, who
works at NASA’ Goddard Centre,
explained that this moon smells of
aromatics, a subfamily of
hydrocarbons. Benzene belongs to
this family, and Trainer thinks it has
a “sweet, aromatic, gasoline-odour.”
The technique used is somewhat
similar to the process candy
manufacturers go through to create
flavours, explained Graham
Templeton at Geek , and can be
used to smell other planets.
Scientists will keep on using this
recipe to compile a list of planetary
smells and come up with what
Templeton described as an extra-
terrestrial smell profile.

If you can get over the whole spitting
thing , camels are pretty cute—at least
until they open up their mouths. It's
like staring into the Sarlacc pit from
Return of the Jedi . What are those
little fleshy things? What purpose do
they serve? What is going on here?
The things in the camel's mouth are
oral papillae, and they're totally
normal, says Luis Padilla, Director of
Animal Health at the St. Louis Zoo.
"Papillae are projections or raised
structures found in different parts of
the mouth, internal cheeks, and
tongues of some species," he says.
"There are many kinds of papillae.
Most have simply a mechanical
function, but some have a sensory
function, either positional sensation or
they may have taste buds on them. In
ruminants, the ones on the cheek and
esophagus can be extremely large, as
what you see in the picture."
When the papillae's function is purely
mechanical, Padilla says, they're
usually cone- or triangular-shaped,
and work in conjunction with the
tongue and the muscles of the mouth
to help manipulate food in one
direction, typically toward the stomach
(which means that a camel's mouth
has more in common with the Sarlacc
pit than just looks!). Camels need
those big papillae because of what
they're eating. "Swallowing chewed
leaves and sticks without some sort of
mechanical assistance can be hard,"
Padilla says. "The papillae are sort of
firm—they can be partially keratinized
—and can feel almost like plastic. In
the areas where they are keratinized,
the papillae protect the cheek and
mouth from getting scratched,
abraded, poked, perforated, or
injured." Though all camelids have
papillae, size and shape can vary, and
they can be affected by the animals'
health, according to Padilla. "Blunting
of the papillae or ulcerated papillae
are signs of certain disease
conditions," he says.
Many different kinds of animals have
papillae, including humans. "There are
lots of tiny papillae in the human
mouth, especially on the tongue,"
Padilla says. "Humans and most
primates do not have papillae as big
as camels’ or other ruminants’.
Because of our masticatory
adaptations and diet, we don’t really
need them to keep food flowing in
one direction on the lining of our
cheek or esophagus." (Also important
to note: "Taste buds sit on top of a
specialized kind of papilla," Padilla
says, "but not all papillae are taste
buds.")
But look inside the mouths of many
fish-eating birds, reptiles, and fish,
and you'll find varying types
of papillae. "There are actually about
10 to 15 types of papillae based on
their shape, location, and function,"
Padilla says. "These papillae are so
large and elaborate in some species—
like penguins or sea turtles—that once
you put something in their throat, it
can be sort of difficult to pull it
back." And they're not just found in
the mouth; Padilla says papillae can
be found in some other parts of the
gastrointestinal system, including the
stomach, esophagus, and rumen of
certain species; depending on the
animal, and the location of the
papillae, proportions and firmness
vary. Sea turtles, for example, have
pretty soft papillae.
Back to camels, though—there's one
more thing Padilla wants to point out
about that mouth. "In some of the
photos [on the Internet], you see the
really impressive canine teeth of some
male camels," he says. "These can
be pretty dangerous."

On December 24, 2012, a strange
double helix cloud was spotted just
outside Moscow, Russia. A series of
amateur photographs were
submitted to a Russian site called
netall.ru (scroll down to Dec. 24) on
the morning of the occurrence.
While it is not entirely known what
caused such a phenomenon, there
is a fairly extensive investigation
under way on the website
metabunk.org which believes it to be
some kind of contrail.

Contrails or vapour trails
are long thin artificial
clouds that sometimes
form behind aircraft. Their
formation is most often
triggered by the water
vapour in the exhaust of
aircraft engines, but can
also be triggered by the
changes in air pressure in
wingtip vortices or in the
air over the entire wing
surface. Like all clouds,
contrails are made of
water, in the form of a
suspension of billions of
liquid droplets or ice
crystals. Depending on the
temperature and humidity
at the altitude the contrail
forms, they may be visible
for only a few seconds or
minutes, or may persist for
hours and spread to be
several miles wide.

smart collar studded with wireless
sensors can now monitor the vital
signs of man's best friend and alert
the owner as soon as it starts feeling
under the weather.
The device, developed by PetPace in
Burlington, Massachusetts, keeps
track of temperature, pulse and
respiration, as well as activity patterns
and the number of calories burned.
While the dog plays, eats and sleeps,
software compares this information
with other breed-specific data. If an
animal's statistics deviate in a way
that indicates a possible problem, an
alert is sent to the owner's
smartphone and to the vet.
Many pets instinctively hide their
symptoms when they are sick, so the
collar could help detect health issues
early on, says Asaf Dagan, chief
veterinary scientist at PetPace. The
smart collar ensures that "your pet's
disease, pain or discomfort will not go
unnoticed", he says.
Because the device works in real
time, vets have more information on
which to base their diagnoses. They
can also keep track of how the animal
responds to treatment, Dagan says.
The collar costs $150 plus $15 per
month for the monitoring service.

HP’s new technology rethinks computer architecture

The Machine is six times more
powerful than existing
computational devices.

HP has unveiled a new machine that
has the potential to revolutionise
computing and cope with the massive
amounts of data generated by mobile
devices and the Internet of things
(a network composed of household
appliances, cars, vending machines
and many other devices).
The Machine is designed to cope with
tonnes of information by using
clusters of special-purpose cores
that are more efficient than
generalised cores. It is wired with
photonics instead of copper wires,
meaning it consumes 80 times less
energy and is much faster.
According to HP, it can handle 160
petabytes of data in 250
nanoseconds.
The Machine is six times more
powerful than existing servers.
However, the first models powered
by this technology won’t be
commercially available until 2018.

                    Future technology 
is beyond the reality of science and technology. Future technology is completely and essentially different with high-tech, the latest technology and cutting-edge technology. The latter represents just an advanced human invention created and been able to master and use recently. Future technology emphasizes human expectations or unforeseen things, which have not yet been invented or used. Only in a certain period, human beings maybe master and use future technology. Where is the development of future technology? How will the future technology exist? We look at several aspects to think about the future development of technology. Of course, this is inseparable from our current life. Future technology largely focus on implementing real-time scenario. It shapes different fields like medical technology, business technology, educational technology and green technology with suitable applications.

Screen world[edit]

The ubiquitous screen will profoundly change the people, culture and business[citation needed]. The impact of screen media and interactive window has not been released. We can imagine that the touch screen will play a much more important role in our life. The touch screen can bring us to have perfect communications with the real world. With the development of the science and technology, it will make a great convenience in our daily life. We can use a multifunctional screen device to deal with our daily schedule. It can tell us the weather and give us an advice about the dress when we get up a new day. We can use the device to control our washing machines, to prepare a healthy breakfast.
After breakfast, we sit in our cars and tell the vehicle systems our destination, the car will then take us there itself. During our work we will have a TV meeting with classmates in some other places. What surround us are many high-tech devices with a touch screen. It makes a great improve in our work efficiency. After the work, we can choose to play a virtual game. The touch screen will give us a real experience and we can control the game role with our whole body. As the touch screen can take a great communication with our idea, we will surround by many more screen. The huge influence will bring us a much more convenient life.

There will be many surprising applications waiting for us, such as when you look at the screen the screen is in fact can see you, know your status, and constantly optimize learning, providing more in line with your service. Technology evolved as a living entity is in duty bound to weaken the ability of human rejection. We know the computer will be more and more intelligent, and the intelligence will be reflected in the human-computer interaction. Beyond our reality, future interaction will be much more actual and useful. The machine can give us 3-D virtual scene simulating the real surroundings, and then we can take what we need.For example, we will not need to spend much time in choosing the clothes. An interactive machine can give us a 3-D virtual scene, where we can choose various clothes. Future interaction will have much more emotion and intelligence.

In the future, people will live in a communicative society. We can get what we want from the social net. We like to share with the whole world, and then endless data between people, things and things will "float" around us. Their integration and convergence will change our living conditions. The share tide and future interaction will bring us a large date to process. The information society will process more and more data, and we need efficient instruments to deal with the big data. What will the big data bring us? Big data represents our past. It records what we have experienced. If we deal with the big date effectively, we will solve many potential problems. Through integrating and analyzing the big date, we can make new value.

The concept of possession has changed. We will not need to buy any book, any music and any general device. Digitization prefers access right to the concept of ownership. In the future, the service will be concentrate. Many people will not have to possess almost everything. We use a portable device to get music, videos, books and many others from the Internet. As for the users, it cost much less money and take us little time to get what we want. So it is very convenient.

We will not get the harvest value by mass copy and selling copies. Value will not exist in copies themselves, but rather the satisfaction of customer value. Such as cellphones do not need money, but date flow gets money. The value is not to create value in kind, but rather to create a "communication" user value.     While archiving with the RAR format is proprietary, Rarlabs supply as copyrighted freeware the source code of the UnRAR unpacker, with a license allowing it to be used in any software, thus enabling others to produce software capable of unpacking, but not creating, RAR archives.[8]

    • Command line RAR and UNRAR were first released in autumn 1993.[5]
    • Early development version WinRAR 1.54b was released in 1995 as 16-bit Windows 3.x application.
    • Version 2.00 was released on September 6, 1996.
    • Since version 3.00 (May 2002), the new RAR3 archive format is implemented. The new compressed archives cannot be managed by old versions of WinRAR.
    • Since version 3.50 (August 2005), WinRAR adds support for interface skins and themes and support Windows XP x64.[14]
    • Since version 3.60 (August 2006), WinRAR includes a multithreaded version of the compression algorithm, which improves compression speed on systems with multipledual-core, or Hyper-threading-enabled CPUs.
    • Since version 3.70 (circa January 2007), WinRAR features support for Windows Vista.[15]
    • Since version 3.80 (September 2008), support for ZIP archives, which contain Unicode file names in UTF-8.[16]
    • Since version 3.90 (May 2009), WinRAR adds support Windows x64 natively and support Windows 7. Also it enhanced support for multithreading.[17]
    • Version 4.00 (March 2011) speeds up decompression by up to 30%. Windows 98Windows Me, and Windows NT are no longer supported; the minimum Windows version required is Windows 2000.[18]
    • Since version 4.10 (January 2012) WinRAR removes all ZIP limitations now allowing unlimited number of files and archive size. WinRAR now also allows to create multivolume ZIP files. ZIP archives now include Unicode file names.[19]
    • Since version 4.20 (June 2012) Compression speed in SMP mode has been increased significantly, but this improvement was made at the expense of increased memory usage. ZIP compression now uses SMP as well. The default SMP mode cannot handle text; text compression is significantly worse unless additional switches are used. Also, Windows 2000 compatibility was removed.[20]
    • Since version 5.00 (September 2013) the new RAR5 archive format is implemented. The new compressed archives cannot be managed by old versions of WinRAR. This new format features a maximum 1 GB dictionary (only in 64-bit version), better multicore support, it removes multimedia, text and itanium binaries special compression algorithms.[21]
